Sand and dust storms worsening in western Kazakhstan — Ecology Minister

A systemic threat of soil degradation and desertification persists in several regions of Kazakhstan, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Yerlan Nyssanbayev told the Regional Ecological Summit in Astana. According to the minister, Kazakhstan has gained significant experience in reforestation and growing forests in challenging natural and climatic conditions. A vivid example is the forest belt around Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. Since 1997, a unique project has been consistently implemented there, and today the area of planted forests covers 102,000 hectares.
