A unique syrmak is being created in Almaty in pursuit of a world record

1 march 2026

In Almaty, dozens of grandmothers have begun creating a unique syrmak — a traditional Kazakh handmade patterned felt carpet — which is set to be recorded in the International Book of Records, Global Best of Records, covering countries of Asia and Africa. A syrmak is a traditional Kazakh felt carpet decorated with ornamental patterns. Every element is crafted entirely by hand using classical felting and stitching techniques, incorporating traditional Kazakh designs. Each ornament reflects the continuity of generations and deep respect for traditional craftsmanship. The most commonly used motif is the “ram’s horns” pattern (koshkarmuiz), along with geometric shapes such as squares and diamonds.
